Dear all,
After a recent suggestion from BOINC users (http://boinc.ucd.ie/fmah/forum_thread.php?id=93), we're going to attempt crowdfunding for a new server to help us cope with the increased load now that ~16,000 computers are connected to our project in 127 countries!
If you'd like to contribute, please visit:
http://www.gofundme.com/FightMalariaAtHome
Thanks!
Ant

Does gofundme.com work like Kickstarter where if you don't hit your goal in a certain time than all the funds are returned to the donors? Or do you keep all the money that has been donated, regardless of hitting the goal?

Is there even a time limit? I can't seem to find one on the donation page.

Edit: Another suggestion is to include some sort of advertising, like what the GPUGRID project did with Amazon. If you use the Amazon link provided by GPUGRID to buy products, GPUGRID will get a cut of the money.

Here is the thread that GPUGRID made about it:

I'm not sure about the limits but we've set a high target of 100,000. I think the best way of advertising is using social media. We have several thousand users on this project. If we can just get each of them to share and like this on their facebook and twitter accounts it would be a good start.

Hi Kevin,

The donation page says that all pledges are unconditional. Therefore, no, pledges would not be returned if certain limits were not reached in certain time frames.

However, I'm quite sure that all funds would be used productively and responsibly to improve the project so I don't see this as an issue for me personally.

Cheers,

Mark

What an awesome start! We've already gone whooshing past €200 in the first week of this crowdfunding drive.

To explain more clearly how the money will be spent - I (Dr Anthony Chubb, UCD Dublin) had to set up a specific PayPal account for FMaH, and had to connect my personal details to make it happen. I was not happy about this, as it connects me too personally to the fund, which should be 'communal', or at least separated from me by company law. But that would take a ridiculous amount of extra admin (I know because I set up a charity that raises funds for children affected by HIV in Southern Africa - http://www.aidafrica.ie/). The annual auditors fees cripple us.

So, a long story short - I have control of these funds, and will use them to buy a new server to boost our BOINC activity. If this does not happen (e.g. we don't raise enough money) then the remaining money will be donated to MMV (http://www.mmv.org/). I can vouch for them personally - they do really great work against malaria. The compounds we're using are given out by them for testing in science labs around the world.

ciao,
Ant

Well I hope my donation goes to a new server, but if not then it will still go to a worthy cause and that's what matters.
Alex.

WOW! 8 hours ago an anonymous donor added €1000.00 to our server appeal fund! This is beyond generous, it's unbelievable!!! I'm totally blown away. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU... whoever you are.
ciao,
Ant

@frankhagen - soliciting via email... give me a break.

@ant - Please contact me regarding servers. I'd be willing to donate some for you but would like to know some requirements.

History: GPUGRID supporters created a second BOINC project (donate@home) to help fund their project bitcoin mining. The GPUGRID project can use only nvidia GPUs, so this was a good way to use GPUs for volunteers that had AMD cards.

Now a second bitcoin BOINC project has been created, Bitcoin Utopia. It's goal is to mine bitcoins to fund altruistic research. It is actively looking for project to spend bitcoins on. Contact them.

Wonderful progress @ant and for mine I was happy to receive a very mildly worded once-off email simply asking me to share around what is a great cause (which I'd already done).

...and it was the user base who made the initial suggestion after all...

Also @cgsmith, a very generous offer and very much in the spirit of the project. I'm sure @ant and @kevin are putting in way more hours than their pay grades justify.

With a bit more enthusiasm we might be half way to a new server by the weekend.

Thanks Mark... and everyone! I've been grinning ear to ear since this started steaming along. The support from everyone is just awesome. Like the crowds cheering runners at the end of long, hard race... it's giving Kevin and me a huge boost of confidence and enthusiasm for this project.
I'll be going on holiday tomorrow for a few weeks, but feel like I don't need it now...! I just want to get stuck in and finish this...!!!
