Hi Guys,
The server is overloaded at the moment. I'm going to turn off the work generator for 24-48 hours to let the assimilator catch up.
Hopefully it will be back up before the weekend is over.
Thanks,
Kevin

It looks to me that the assimilator is NOT working.

Yes, according to the server status on the website, the assimilator is not running (?).

A couple of minutes ago the assimilator came back online, but there's still no new work.
What exactly caused the overload? The server status page didn't show anything unusual, or did I miss something?

Hi Guys,
We had a bug in the assimilator and a big backlog. I've just fixed the bug but we still have a backlog to get through. Hopefully we will be running tonight of tomorrow morning.
Sorry for the delay.

we still have a backlog to get through

Is this backlog visible somewhere on the status page?

The status page is currently showing

Workunits waiting for assimilation 618,453

That's around 30% of the backlog before Kevin fixed the bug.

Hi everyone,
I've restarted the work generator. The assimilator backlog isn't quite cleared yet but we want to push on and get through this experiment. The backlog should slowly clear over the next day or so.
Thanks for your input.

Hi Kevin,

I've noted that the assimilator queue is getting longer and longer again (up to several hundred thousand WUs again).

Obviously we're all going to keep crunching WUs, but is there anything we can do/can be done to assist with the lengthening queue?

Hi Mark,
We're overloaded at the moment. We will need to periodically stop the work generator to shorten the assimilator queue.
Regards,
Kevin

Denial of Service via donated CPU cycles? You simply have too many people that care about your research :)

Through this recent regular problem I'm hoping you can get some donated equipment (server?) to help with the bottle-necking. Please consider posting a request in the news section of the site.

*raises a glass* Here's to many future DoS as too many people care about helping in the fight against malaria. And I look forward to crunching again when more WUs are released. Cheers~

A bit of donated hardware. What a wonderful idea. Otherwise with the number of contributors, Kevin's poor server is going to be having conniptions weekly!

Cheers,

Mark

How about crowdfunding a server?

Very cool idea, maybe a KickStarter campaign? Or even consider doing it how GPUGRID does it with the crown badge for anyone who has contributed funds to the project. Even better- see if that badge can push to stats like other badges. At GPUGRID it only shows up on their site and does not push to sites like BOINC Stats or Free-DC

Like! Better than donating some hardware they can't use.
